I had to use a cooking pot even at the pot already there. So why is one even set up by the Fab cooking vendor if you still need to have a cooking pot in your inv?

The large pot at the cooking vendor is a heat source. Your choice of cooking instrument will determine what kind of dish you get, for example I use the cooking pot. Everything I cook has the word "Fried" in it.

You can also choose not to use a heat source and make a cold dish by simply throwing ingredients together. I remember making cold dile soup, it's a pity I couldn't feed it to my horses in MO2 like I could in MO1.
