What are cuprum based alloys are used for? Is it not like steel is always superior?

If you are talking about Bron, Messing and Tindremic Messing then yes iron based alloys are superior, mostly because they are lighter.

Messing and Tind Messing are way too heavy to be used in armour crafting, but they can sometimes be used for crafting hammer and maces. Tind messing defensive stars are actually quite good (right between steel and tungsteel) but the weight is usually not worth it when you can just use steel or tungsteel instead.
Pretty sure only Ogmirs can wear full slider Tind messing armour its so heavy.

Not sure there are many other uses except as mats for building structures.

Just an interesting little fact - Bron armor is about the equivalent of Reptile, so if you're an oghmir footie and grinding refining, a bron set weighs about 33kg, which an ogh can typically wear.
