Maltie realized she was dreaming, that moment of lucidity when one realizes they have never been walking down a corridor while holding a candle, approaching a table with an even larger candle set in the center, so that the lights seemed to match in size. There was nowhere to go but forward; there might not have been a behind.

At the table sat a man; every seated creature in a dream is a man until proven otherwise, and it was not until she was closer that she realized it was NOT a man, rather a dimly illuminated figure with the body of a horse. Its head could only be described as A PARCEL.

There was a second chair, presumably hers, so she slid in, smoothing her bad-quality Kpad armor to avoid uncomfortable wrinkling, which happens even in dreams. Without warning, the Parcel’s now-apparent mouth began to move.

THERE ARE TOO MANY HORSES, it said. She did not reply, so it repeated its thesis. THERE ARE TOO MANY HORSES.

“Horses in graveyards—“, it continued, “Horse manure against decomposing limbs creates noxious gasses which are raising the temperature of Nave by a full degree every year.” The result, it continued, would be catastrophe.

IT MUST BE STOPPED, it continued. “You can begin by thinning horses at their point of origin, but the end-game, your destiny, is to reduce the horse population by 50%. Every stray horse (that is, un-mounted) should be eliminated.”
