As it stands, calx is needed in immense quantities for efficient smelting. The only real alternative is gathering loads of bor by hand or, in certain cases, buying from a vendor. In order to reduce dependence on calx and vendors, we should be able to create charcoal from wood which functions similarly to coal. This also would have the effect of allowing high yield smelting in towns like moh ki and vadda that have less access to calx. I understand that allowing easy coke could lead to various economic concerns so charcoal should probably be unable to make coke.

Making coal come from anywhere other than Calx would destroy the entire trade balance of the map. For instance, GK has no Calx a very long way from it. It's sparse when it comes to trees but there are some right outside town many of them well before you'll find the nearest Calx deposit. GK has every other ore type up there including tephra and gabore which are very sparse in the overall map and can only be efficiently refined in the GK/Cave Camp area. The last thing we need is people making Coal in or anywhere near GK.

There are some very large Calx deposits in a lot of areas that will be fairly accessible when we have pack animals. Like a lot of lakes lined with Calx deposits which are a decent jog from a settlement but not a long distance if you can get a big load to haul back as opposed to what fits in inventory. If there really becomes issues with even some of the more remote deposits constantly being on lockdown I'd rather see them increase the amount of available Calx per deposit than start making changes of this that would greatly change trade.

Although it makes sense, it would indeed drastically change the maps resource balance and essentially make calx and calx product trade redundant as trees are everywhere.

Moh Ki and Vadda don't have good access to Calx? Huh? Just go to Sausage Lake.

I think perhaps he means Calx that is convenient in the game's current state but yeah that's not a great way to think about it. Sausage Lake isn't great for now but it will be when we have donkeys and other pack animals.
